Only the New York Times could make going without air-conditioning a bougie undertaking.
P.S. It amuses me that they talk about the “pre-1960s” houses without air-conditioning as though they were ancient. My house is from the 1860s—when *gasp* there wasn’t any air-conditioning either. The article was true in this regard though: living with pre-chilled air really isn’t that bad most of the time. But I’ll be damned if I’m trading in my newly-available (due to re-wiring, thanks Dad!) window unit for those days when I don’t feel like drowning in my own sweat.
